Unrest in China: The Next Phase
Developments throughout China have taken place over the past 48h with unrest continuing and a likely increase in security posture. This report will provide a tactical SITREP and assessment.
Background
(U) Last Thursday's fatal fire in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang's far western region, has triggered protests across China. After videos of the incident appeared to show that lockdown protocols had prevented firefighters from reaching the victims, the public was outraged. The fire in the apartment complex claimed the lives of at least 10 people and injured nine more.
Security Forces
(U) As at 29 2300L NOV 22, military vehicles were reportedly observed in the streets outside WANDA PLAZA, YUNLONG LAKE. The vehicles are possible ZBD-04 IFVs.
(U) As at 0100L 30 NOV 22, further military vehicles were observed at XUZHUO, JIANGSU. Variants currently unknown but markings indicate that they are from 8th Battalion, 1st Company of either the 34th or 35th Mechanised Brigade based out of JIANGSU. Reports indicated that convoys were moving towards Shanghai which has been a nexus of the protests.
